Question : How should we introduce a puppy to a wheelchair?
my Uncle is in a wheelchair and i do the training with the puppy...hes a Shetland Sheepdog Border Collie mix...his father was a therapy dog and the woman had an accidental litter with a rescue dog that was in a silent heat...anyways...ive already trained him a lot of things but i want to know how to train him with my Uncles wheelchair...its really not like a regular wheelchair tho...its one of those motorized wheelchairs. i need to train the puppy to walk along beside the wheelchair but not to fear it...does anyone know how to go about this?

Answer:
I am going to assume here that the puppy has not seen the wheelchair before: 1. Place the wheelchair in a room the puppy is allowed to go into. Don't turn the power on. Just place the chair in the middle of the room. Let the puppy (off leash) check it out, it will smell the wheels, etc. 2. Once the puppy has had a chance to 'look it over', then while the puppy is NOT close to it. Turn the power on. Some 'chairs make noise when turned on some don't. Then GENTLY move the toggle switch so the chair moves forward an inch or two, then back an inch or two. Let the puppy see it move. Then turn it off again. Wait a few minutes and repeat the above. Do this until the puppy again checks out the chair at least twice after the first time. Be VERY careful to not run over the puppy's toes. 3. Sit in the chair and call the puppy. Get the puppy in your lap on the chair and again do step # 2. 4. Once the puppy stops treating it any differenly than a normal chair then hook a SHORT lead to the puppy and sitting in the chair and using the hand that is NOT controling the joystick, walk the puppy SLOWLY next to the chair on the same side as the hand that is holding the leash. Do NOT get upset if you roll over the puppies toes once or twice. It will happen. 5. Once the puppy is walking correctly next to the chair (it should be watching the front tire closest to it rather than the owners knee or leg) teach it the commands SLOW for slow movement, WALK for normal speed movement and FAST for the fastest speed the chair will go. Do NOT use the HEAL command when using a chair, it would most likely confuse the dog.
