Questions & Answers
Question : mobility rate?
my daughter is severley autistic with no speech, no sense of danger cant read and is very repetitive in her behaviour, public transport is an absolute nightmare were she will attack people without warning...stop dead in middle of roads and even run across them without warning, she can only go out with 2 people at a time so as you can imaging holidays are hard to do. She has been on the lower rate mobility since agd about 4 but i really think she needs higher rate so we can obtain a car, would she recieve it as i am not sure, i thought that the recipient needed to use some sort of mobility aid like a wheelchair. Anyone who knows a bit about this would be great if you could answer
thanks e1 for your answers...sounds like its gonna be hard to get, i try to protect my daughter thats why we are a very private family, the last time i went on a bus with my daughter i knew what would happen but it had no choice but to go on and we were asked to get off because she was screaming for the wondows to be closed, as i prefer to walk i cant see me getting a letter of the bus company unless i take her on just to be asked to get off. It can be so infuriating sometimes, i know a family who get high rate mobility because there daughter is slightly deaf in one ear, yet manages to go to the shop and play out with friends something my daughter has never been able to do. Autism by the very nature differs from day to day and if i am not awarded it i probably will have to fight for it
Answer:
Extremely hard to get high mobility for a child with autism ...i had to fight to get it and it was only because it was becoming impossible for us to go anywhere and we had letters stating Thomas was being removed from public transport from the bus comapnys and it was having an affect on his twin sister who was also becoming very down about the situation so we were stuck completely...he has only been getting it a few months and he is coming up to ten ..all i can say is i wish you lots of luck

Question : Push and Ride vs. Activity Walker for 6 month old baby toys.?
My son is just over 6 months. He has been sitting on his own for nearly two months, and pulling up to stand for 2 weeks (though wabbles and needs something to steady him. I wonder if these toys are appropriate. It says 6 months/9 months and up on the little tikes push and ride/acticity walkers. Also I am looking for some simple and inexpensive developmental toys. We have a play gym and activity jumper but he gets bored. These days he just sits down, leans forward and pushes with his legs as though to stand up - falls forward on to his face and continues to push with his legs- butt in the air pushing his face along the bed (until he gets frustrated that he can't get far). He is so curious, I want to give him something to foster this curious nature AND let him get mobile. Any toy suggestions and comments on the mobility aids would be awesome! Thanks
Answer:
The push and rides are cool, but at your sons age, they'll move way to quickly out from under him when he tries to use it for support.
I suggest a regular old walker for him. Walkers are not dangerous as long as you've properly safety proofed AND have an eye on him at all times!!!
An exersaucer would be good too.
But... all he really needs to foster his curious nature is your interaction. Seriously, I had every toy under the sun for my son, but his favorite activity (that he got the most out of, I think) was playing with me & and husband.
Start reading to him now too. Won't do anything educationally, but it'll get him used to sitting with you while reading for later on.
Balls to chase after will aid him in wanting to crawl too :)

Question : Dissertation Help - Subject: Disability Products?
I am a mature student studying product design and am calling upon your advice. I worked as a mobility enginner before returning to education and through my travels have found that there is a huge lack of design surrounding disability aids. I would like to hear from you regarding your views on modern mobility product design, particularly multi-disability products. Do you own any disability products (stairlifts, hoists, hearing aides, etc)? do you struggle to use them? Do you think much design has been considered?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Regards
Dan
ruth10uk2003, I totally agree with you, the hoist slings were very confusing for us to demonstrate when I used to install the systems. http://www.guldmann.com were a god company for their hoist related products and support, take a look on their website. Maybe a sling should be produced that has colour-coded tabs to align the correct holes with their hooks?
Answer:
work on a rough terrain wheel chair
