Questions & Answers
Question : how does one weigh a person in a wheelchair?
my 26 yr old son is a quad and is losing weight rapidly. we are having a hard time finding a way to weigh him. he's too heavy for me to lift. his dr advised us to go to a meat dept in our local grocery store. i was mortified that he would even suggest such a thing. i asked his staff if they could look into it and they really were no help at all. any suggestions? he weighs under 150 lbs at last check so he's not obese. also, uses a power wheelchair.
Answer:
You probably just want to make sure he has a well balanced meals.
Don't kill me or anything but maybe he's depressed and his body maybe is just passing the food he eats.
I would suggest finding another doctor who would do something correctly and not be an ass.

Question : Do I have to lower the floor in a mini van for a power wheelchair?
I am going to have to buy a van for my husband who needs to have a power wheelchair. I'm not sure if I need to buy a van thats already wheelchair accessible(which is more expensive) or if I can just buy a regular min van and buy the ramps for him to get in. I'm just not sure if the height is high enough for him to drive into the van? The wheelchair looks like one of those hover rounds chairs.
Answer:
If he can walk a little there are liftes that can be put in the back you use the back door.If not you will need to get a conversion van Fr more head room they also make liftes for side doors.

Question : how can someone suffering from spinal cord injury operate power or manual wheelchair?
how can someone suffering from spinal cord injury operate power or manual wheelchair?
Answer:
It completely depends at what level their spinal cord injury is. Each spinal segment controls a different set of muscles. It is very complicated, but generally the spinal segments in the neck control the arms, (and a really high spinal cord injury would even prevent you from breathing on your own) and your lower back spinal segments control your legs. So if you had a spinal cord injury at L2, you wouldn't be able to move the muscles that L2 moves and down from there. You don't just lose function at that segment such as L2, you lose all function below that point also.
Like I said it is very complicated, but generally motor areas supplied by a spinal segment are called myotomes and then sensation is a whole other thing a supply to them is called dermatomes. Here's a site that helps explain it better then I can. Neuro was definitely the hardest class I had to learn to become a physical therapist. Hard, but very interesting.
