Question : I have never taken a train ride cross country or in general, and the next winter break to come, I want to
take my son on a cross country trip. He has always had a fixation on Gettsburg. I want to go from Northern California to Gettsburg Pa, round trip..But I am new to this, I looked on the Amtrak web page and it was hopeless. How do I find out how much the fare will be, how long of a trip, and when one departs....We have a train depot in my town.
Answer:
You didn't say where you are starting from, or how old your son is so I will use Emeryville, California as the starting point and assume your son is under 15 years old. You would travel on the "California Zephyr" to Chicago. Trip time is 55h 10m. There would be a 2h 45m layover. You would then board the "Capital Limited" to Pittsburgh. Travel time is 9h 25m. There would be a 1h 50m layover. You would then board the "Pennsylvanian" to Harrisburg (the nearest city to Gettysburg). Travel time is 5h 25m. Total time is roughly 75 hours. The one way fare for 1 adult and 1 child in a reserved coach seat (reclining seat) is $231.00. To have a Super-liner roomette (with a bed) the fare would be $657.00 meals included. Round trip fares would be double the one way fare. It departs Emeryville at 7:10am , and arrives in Harrisburg at 12:45pm of the fourth day. You would probably want to rent a car for the short trip from Harrisburg to Gettysburg. I see that "rr" has copied my answer word for word. It's not nice to plagerise other peoples work "rr".

Question : Has anyone taken a train from the Northeast to Mississippi or Florida
I want to visit some friends in the south during January. I usually fly, but would love to see more of the country (and am not crazy about driving alone). I hear people say that they take the train instead of flying - so if you're out there, tell me what it's like. The prices on the Amtrak site are higher than airfares for the same trip. How do you find bargains
Answer:
Go to Amtrak's site. http://www.amtrak.com They have a discount section called "Hot Deals". On the side bar on that page, there's different kinds of deals. Look at the Weekly Specials. You will need to know which train you want to take. Book the trip early because the eastern corridor trains fill up fast. We took Amtrak to Kansas City from Michigan in June and loved it. One day of travel, no traffic, lovely dining car and snack car. Some trains even have power outlets on the wall so you can work on your laptop.
