Editorial Review :

A young boy’s life is shattered when his mentor and older brother breaks his neck playing high school football and lands in a wheelchair. Teetering at poverty line without insurance, all resemblance of a normal family or social life is snatched away from the boy and his family; stress replaces love in the home. Later on, as a young adult, the same little boy witnesses his youngest brother’s battle against leukemia, a child killer, and he prays that he doesn’t die. As if he hadn’t had enough anguish during his youth, twenty years later the same boy, now a man and father himself, is forced to endure the helpless sorrow and pain watching his three year old son fight cancer, a 4 year battle of never ending therapy, pain and tragedy.

Hello, my name is Chuck Kesterson, and I am the “young boy” and father who is witness to all the tragedies described above. I have written a 76,000 word, nineteen chapter novel of these non-fictional events. My book’s main objectives are to paint a picture with words detailing my wonderful early childhood and how it was shattered with the tragedy of my older brother’s accident and my little brother’s fight with leukemia. I continue on to explain my participation as a firefighter during two major airplane crashes, then on to describe the events surrounding my 3 year old boy’s four year battle with cancer.

Editorial Review :

"Top cat Arnie teases Philip because he is confined to a wheelchair. Yet when Arnie falls down the school steps and breaks a leg, twists a wrist, and sprains a tail, he begins to see life from a different perspective. With few books about mainstreaming available, this entertaining story should be welcome."--Booklist. Full color.

Kids understand it!

I don't agree with the former reviewer. I have used this book in classes of 2nd and 3rd grade children. They all understood the story and its message. I thought it was a very good book.

Carlson failed miserably with this one!

Clearly the author made an effort towards inclusion but she failed miserably. Arnie and the New Kid is really the story of how the school bully was able to save a classmate with a physical disability from a life of shunning by befriending him. This is far from the message that we should be imparting in our children. We need to show children that people with disabilities are valuable, contributing citizens. I'd recommend Verna Allette Willkins' books Are We There Yet and Boots for a Bridesmaid as wonderful examples of this fact.

Question : What kind of carpet should I get for wheelchair use?
My carpet in the bedrooms and hallway is the original carpet (16 years old). it is a plush or cut pile. My husband is a quadriplegic in a motorized wheelchair. He is very tough on all types of floors. We have burber in the living room and dining room and it seems to wear well. I would like to try frieze. He tends to mash and twist the carpet, especially when turning into a doorway. Will the frieze mat down quickly?

Answer:
go with laminate flooring. Comes in a variety of colors and styles, is relative inexpensive, looks good and holds up well. Used often on HGTV show

Answer:
The Government has created a portal to help individuals who need benefits because of life events. Visit http://www.govbenefits.gov Use the drop down button DO YOU NEED BENEFITS BECAUSE OF A LIFE EVENT? Choose the life situation best applicable to you and then see if you qualify for the available government assistance. Forget grant money - there's hardly any money for individuals. You'd be hard pressed to find any grant that would support individuals. The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant. For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant. There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved. You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants. Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Question : How can i sell a Brand new Motorized Wheelchair? I have used craigslist with no luck!?
How can i sell a Brand new Motorized Wheelchair? I have used craigslist with no luck!?

Answer:
Craigslist has never given me anything but spammers so you are not alone in your frustration. I have a couple of suggestions: Check www.ebay.com to see if they have any for sale and how they ship them. Try local nursing homes as they might have a bulletin board. Try your local pharmacy to see if they have a bulletin board or info on people needing one. Keep trying Craigslist as that is local but try other things as well. Good luck. TB
