Real Age Diet It works!
Just look at Dr. Roizon- age 63. Great skin! You know he has to be doing the right stuff. All common sense, but the book gives great details for why and the impact easy, moderately difficult and maybe more challenging changes make on the aging process. Worth the read.

Great Info on the Concept of Medical Tourism
Josef Woodman has definitely performed his due diligence and compiled a very useful guide to medical tourism. As a medical tourism service agency, we at MedRetreat appreciate his time and energy in writing "Patients Beyond Borders" because of the preliminary education it provides to our clients. Through his book, our clients are more educated and open to the concept of medical travel.
Once again, great effort Mr. Woodman!

Decent but not thorough enough
It's got good information but not enough of it. It tries to cover lots of things but I'd really like more in depth guidance. To get one started on your own research....it's excellent.

Every medical traveler should read this first
Medical travel (or medical tourism) is all over the news these days as people look for the best health care, not only in terms of cost but also in safety, quality, and simple human kindness. Even though we all know the American health care system is struggling and we've all heard horror stories about dirty hospitals with overworked nurses accidentally giving patients the wrong drugs, many of us are still not sure that medical travel is a good idea. It's new to a lot of people and the old stereotype of back-alley clinics with doctors who don't speak a word of English still hangs on.
More and more people are finding out that medical travel really does open up a world of excellent medical and dental care, if you are smart and do your homework. Woodman's book is very timely and he does a lot of the work for you by pulling together information that would take hours of research on the Web to find. He goes beyond the superficial "people are getting tummy-tucks overseas" stories and he covers all aspects of medical travel. He is clear about both the potential advantages and potential pitfalls of traveling for health care.
As health travel planners, we at Affordable World Care can be more effective in working with patients who understand what to expect and know how to work with their doctor or dentist to get the best, safest result from their travel. We have copies of this guide available whenever we exhibit at health or beauty expos, and we recommend it to potential patients who call us to plan their travel.
The new edition has added a considerable number of country-specific resources and information. For those who have already decided on a destination, the country guides such as the Singapore edition are even more detailed. We look forward to a Latin American edition that would highlight the great offerings in Mexico and Central and South America. Because medical travel as an industry is still new, some areas are still not fully developed. As the industry grows, we would like to see Woodman include more material on insurance coverage for medical travel, government licensing and inspection of facilities (both by the U.S. and overseas governments), and efforts to measure the quality of outcomes experienced by medical travelers.

Treated me well
The sellers sent me the wrong book, the 2007 version not 2008 like Amazon had listed. (With books like this, you want the most up to date info.) When I made them aware of this they were very kind and refunded me the purchase price and shipping and let me keep the book. I very much appreciated their fairness.

Good Stuff and at the Right Time
An aging population should be rearing its angry head at every turn in protest of the outrageous healthcare costs we as a society are being forced to endure. Alas, this is not likely to happen in any meaningful manner so what do we get? HMO's and PPO's, ASA's and HSA's all coming and going in an effort to get a grip on the absurdly high prices we have come to reluctantly expect (and, let's face it, accept). But, as Mr Woodman's book so practically illustrates, there are alternatives to consider when an expensive or extensive medical procedure is the chosen option. If you are in the market for a reference tool of this nature, this is the best I've seen. Highly recommended.

Lost 4 lbs in 1 week...this REALLY works.
This is not a fad diet, to me, this is a whole new eating lifestyle! I must admit that I was a bit reluctant to try this "low carb, high fat" diet, but I've tried EVERYTHING and nothing seemed to work! I used to workout 5x a week last year and was on a low calorie diet, and I lost only 4 lbs in 2 months. Disappointed and discouraged with my results, I just stopped going to the gym. Low calorie diets DON'T work for me - I used to stock up on lean cuisine meals whenever they would go on sale, because I thought it was convenient and easy to count calories that way. However, I am hungry an hour later after eating a lean cuisine meal. So I just recently took a step back and analyzed my eating habits - lots of "low calorie" foods but high in carb. I ate lots of oatmeal, wheat bread, sugary granola bars that I thought were healthy, those "100 calorie" snacks etc - I was ALWAYS hungry. That's when I realized that I wouldn't be able to lose any weight this way, and that I had to reanalyze my eating habits. That's when I started researching about low carb diets and found Dr. Atkin's book. It made a lot of sense to me....as I read it at the bookstore, the words "ah ha!" kept repeating in my head. I quickly purchased the book (earlier this week) and I've already lost 4 lbs. Sure, it's probably water weight, but I FEEL great. I see and feel myself getting thinner, I'm NEVER hungry and I don't crave sweets at all. I'm not following the induction phase thoroughly, but I'm maintaining a low carb intake. If I want veggies, I'll eat it. Fruits? I'll have an apple and munch on grilled chicken to keep my insulin levels in check. Bread? I'll have a slice of low carb 5g wheat bread with cheese. I just got back from a party and needless to say, they had a wide array of delicious sweets & tempting food - but I wasn't craving any of it...and this is coming from a girl that loves to bake cupcakes, pastries and desserts! I now snack on sugar-free jello gelatin when I'm in the mood for something sweet. I had 1/2 of a cupcake and ate grilled chicken kabob right after. The point is, keep it balanced...moderation is key, you CAN have a low carb lifestyle. It doesn't mean you can never have a cupcake/donut again, just listen to your body and don't abuse it. If I want a donut, I'll eat 1/3 of one with an egg white omelette. I never eat carbs alone, I always pair it with some sort of protein...it's working for me so far :) I have a wedding to attend in 3 weeks, so I'll definitely stick with this low carb phenomenon. Thank you Dr. Atkins for showing me the way....I've been getting compliments from family members & friends and it hasn't even been a week! Give it a shot! It's totally worth it :)

An oldie, but a goodie. The original lifestyle is still the very best.
In 1998, I lost over 50 pounds on the original Atkins Lifestyle diet, the book I am reviewing now. In 2004, after the birth of my child, I needed to lose the 20 pounds that I gained whilst expecting. I went back on the original diet and lost in in about 4 months or less.
The original tried and true Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution allowed me to lose about four pounds to kick the diet off in the first week, gave me a ton of energy, and gradually allowed me to lose the rest of the weight after the introduction without problems or cravings.
I have lived on this diet for nearly 10 years and have never gained back the weight that I had lost (except for expecting a child). It's been easier to maintain weight loss with this lifestyle/diet than any other diet I have been on.
Some people have a very difficult time following the diet. If one is a vegan, this diet will really never work, if one is addicted to processed wheat flour and sugar...there's hope. In about a week one loses that addiction.
This diet/lifestyle has been given a bad name by various groups, physicians and people. I believe that those whom disagree with this diet only focus on the "Induction" period.
Here's a glimpse inside this diet: It's basically knowing how many complex carbohydrates your body can handle on a daily bases (instead of calories) and it's about cutting out all processed foods. It works on the premise that sugar carbohydrates make a person fat, not fat.
I tried the current, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. It is my understanding that this diet was modified by a corporation that purchased Dr. Atkins products and rights when he went into retirement. This diet focuses on promoting their bars, shakes, and other convenient items. I really didn't care for that. Those things slow down one's progress and keep you dependant on convenient foods that really aren't that good for you. I also went on the official Atkins site and joined their message board. There's a lot of very crabby people on that message board. I'm guessing that this new diet isn't working very well for them either.

I bought this Dr Atkin's Diet Revolution book for a gift for someone. The person seemed to be happy to get the book.
Rating :
Interesting as history
After the publication of "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," this older version seems to have been neglected. Mostly this is good because while it's a great book and I enjoyed reading it, Dr. Atkins' understanding of things has come a long way since he wrote it.
For example, the old version recommends almost zero carbohydrates and doesn't take fiber into account. The new book recommends no less than 20g of net carbohydrates, and fiber can be subtracted from the total count for any food since it doesn't raise blood sugar.
In the old version, the first phase was simply called "Phase 1" and lasted only one week; now it is called "Induction" and lasts 2 weeks. Since it includes more carbs, it can be adhered to for up to six months.
Dr. Atkins puts a big emphasis on ketone strips. The new program includes using them, but downplays them. Many people - like me - have trouble getting even light pink on our best days. I think downplaying, while still leaving the option there, is the best thing to do.
Other differences just have to do with the passage of time. 30 years ago Splenda wasn't on the market, so there is no mention of it. Same with cyclomates. Who today has heard of this sweetener? And the cure for constipation then was a mild laxative. Nowadays fiber supplements are on the market and are the recommended thing.
The only part of the book I skipped was the recipes, though if you are into cooking it would be a really awesome part to look through. It takes up significant space, so if you are looking for low carb recipes, the book might be worth the price just for that.
I loved the end of the book and wish that section had been included in the new one. It's Dr. Atkins' statement to the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition of Human Needs on April 12, 1973 (very early versions of the book do not include this). He does a wonderful job of defending his diet to the naysayers. I highly recommend reading this section of the book.
One last thing, the weight chart at the back of the book is not realistic in today's world. It's based on the old version of the Met Life charts. The new version allows people to weigh more, and I know my body just stalls out my weight loss at 145. On the old Met Life chart that was too much. On the new one it is a perfectly normal weight.
I recommend this book as a good history lesson in how the diet began, but to lose weight I recommend "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution," which has the advantage of 30 years' worth of learning that the doctor didn't have when he wrote the first book.

Discover the most talked about, groundbreaking health plan in years - Biblically based, scientifically sound, and proven to work.
After facing an "incurable" disease, Dr. Rubin baffled conventional doctors by discovering a cure - by turning to "man's first - and only - true health plan" using the dietary principles found in the Bible. It's a truly holistic approach that:
- Boosts the immune system. - Enables followers to maintain ideal weight. - Produces abundant natural energy. - Improves physical appearance. - Reduces stress. - Helps digestion.
Dr. Rubin achieves all this and more by incorporating the four pillars of health (spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional), and prescribing a plan for diet, nutrition, exercise, hygiene, and body therapies for complete and total physical and spiritual wellness.

Excellent and informative book
This is an excellent book which explains many facets of healthy eating & living. I buy a lot of Jordan Rubin's Garden of Life products because they are high quality and real. There are people that put down Jordan's products but they are usually the mainstream medical profession that want to keep you sick. It's like the old saying "There's no money in the CURE"..The medical community wants to keep you sick so they can stay wealthy..
Sincerely, Bill Morin [...].

circumspect...
Cons ... 1. Where did you go to grad school again? His phd is from the "people's university of america". Does that place even exist? What is a NMD??? It's really hard to just overlook this. 2. Pricey supplements. If he's such a philanthropist why the exorbitant cost for the HMO probiotics? (btw he is the exclusive supplier) 3. Inconsistency. Early in the book he talks about the importance of getting dirty and playing in the dirt. Then later he talks about the danger of germs (on planes etc) and trys to sell you his daily cleansing package. 4. Charlatan? The book sometimes reads like a late-night infomercial - he's plugging his products so blatantly that its hard not to get suspicious of his true motives. btw, the original meaning of the word charlatan is a "seller of medicines" 5. The Rich man's diet. You have to be wealthy to afford all the high dollar organic food he suggests. I can't even find raw milk anywhere. 6. Has this guy ever read the New Testament? He makes a lot of appeals to dietary laws in the Bible. It clearly states in 1Tim 4 ...commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. I've eaten a lot of weird stuff while serving as a missionary in various Asian countries. They seem to be pretty healthy to me. 7. Shorter lifespans than before? He keeps suggesting that we don't live as long as older generations of people did. First of all those Asian countries that eat all the weird food have way longer lifespans that the avg. American lifespan. The funny thing is, everything I remember reading suggests that the average lifespan in increasing, not decreasing.
Pros After surfing the web it seems a lot of people w/ Crohn's have seen results by implementing his suggested diet.
My wife has a mild case of chron's. We're trying this out. If she gets better we'll stick with it for life. I will say that since I've removed the large majority of processed sugar out of my diet, I've lost a few pounds despite the fact that I still eat ridiculous amounts of carbs. We're trying our best to get all the chemicals out of everything we eat. It's not easy. It seems like just about anything that is wrapped in a package has some sort of chemical in it.
It's difficult to argue with his personal results. But- is it the diet or the products? If he didn't have any letters behind his name and he wasn't the exclusive distributor of all his trademarked super-duper life changing products, I not be so suspicious.

The Maker's Diet is great!!
I am enjoying this book and the 40 day diet plan. Try it and see if it makes you feel better!!

This book has changed my life!
I had digestive and other problems for years and was only getting worse. At 41 I was missing 3 or days of work a month. I started reading this book and changed my eating habits and my acid reflux and irritable bowel are almost non-existent. I haven't been sick for over 10 months and I'm loving it! My energy is up and so is my attitude. I just gave up pork and other scavenger meats and processed foods with hormones, additives, and preservatives. This was tough since we loved our pork roasts and catfish! My husband has even seen a significant change in himself.
I didn't get into all of the supplements except for the Super Greens, Super Seed and Soil-Based Microorganism capsules. I don't even take these daily. My advice is to use what works for you and not go whole hog on everything. I started slowly and used the foods I had and when I bought new I looked into the more wholesome foods, being careful to check labels. If you're having any digestive issues I highly recommend you give this a read. I have bought 4 other copies as gifts for relatives and friends.

To be respected, girls need to know how they want to be treated, treat themselves that way, and let others know (respectfully, of course) to do the same. This smart, savvy book helps teen girls get respect and hold on to it no matter what. It covers topics they deal with daily, like body image, family, friends, the media, school, relationships, and rumors. It confronts tough issues like sexual harassment, date rape, sex, drugs, and alcohol. And it debunks the myths and stereotypes that hold girls back. Sidebars, scenarios, quotes from teens, tips, definitions, activities, and writing exercises get girls' attention and keep them involved. The understanding, supportive "big sister" style inspires trust. Girls learn that respect is connected to everything, that every girl deserves respect, and that respect is always within reach because it starts on the inside.
Customer Review :
Great Gift For Girls
I read this book while researching teen abuse and was very impressed. It gets all of those sensitive topics that adults and teens would rather ignore (not just sex, but abuse, eating disorders and difficulties in relationships and friendships) out in the open. The book teaches girls how to make good decisions for themselves while remaining open and communicating with friends and family. The theme is respect through empowerment and is targeted at an age group and gender that often (sadly) feel they have no power.
It's down-to-earth and isn't preachy, which is important because kids tend to rebel against that method. I didn't always listen to my parents as a pre-teen and teen (shocker of the century) and I could've used the guidelines in this book to make better decisions rather than trying to do everything on my own. I especially like the activities in the book -- makes it interactive and personal. It's a great gift for a pre-teen or teen girl -- much better investment than a new shirt or iTunes gift certificate!

Excellent Working Template for OPEN dialog
I have two girls, and we went through chapaters that were relevent to us, right now, and used many of the suggestions. One of the things I love about the book is it promotes open dialog between parents, but also sisters and friends. I have seen it work in action, and my daughters made up their own 'sisterhood' contract which we posted on the refrigerator, and refer too, often. The chapters you can review first if there are subjects that are sensitive to you, however, I found the 'sex' chapter very well written and received by both girls. Our next step is to have a 'sisterhood sleepover' where the girls invite their friends, and we have some open discussions on self respect and respect of others. This is an excellent tool for a parent, or guardian of a young person.

Forget the fear, provoke and nurture that young female voice
As an educator of young men and women I commend the authors for writing a book that a young audience would actually use. Yes use. As reviewers have noted this book speaks with a tone of gentle authority without being preachy. More precisely, the book gives girls real-life problem solving guidance. Finally, this is a thought-provoking book for young women which also includes practical advice. An honest to goodness "Here's how I handled that situation and here are a few more suggestions" primer. I recommend it for classroom use.

Very Disappointed
My 12 year old daughter received this book as a gift and I am so glad that I decided to read it first. The book is very "teen-friendly" in it's approach, but it's message is anything but innocent. Let me quote an example from the book, "Your dad or mom might have told you not to have sex until marriage, but....the question is, what do YOU belive is right for you?" There are many exaples such as this throughout this book. I find this appalling and totally disrespectful not only parents, but to teachers and community leaders who are trying to encourage girls not only to have respect for themselves, but also others. I Strongly urge parents to read this book before letting their daughters even open the first page. I plan on throwing our copy into the trash.
Rating :
A resources for parents, teachers, and mentors to read with young females
I picked up Respect with a critical eye, fully prepared to read some fluffy, new-age, condescendingly grrrl-empowering text. Trust me, none of those adjectives fit this terrific resource. Authors Macavinta and Vander Pluym provide talking points for discussion and personal introspection on topics ranging from friends to family to the opposite sex to body image and self-image. The book is not a guide about what to think or do, but a template for drafting one's own guidelines and ethos. The authors continually recommend that young readers keep a journal and use specific topics and questions as launching points for making entries in the jounral.
I read the chapter about romantic relationships with special interest. As a twenty-something professional, I considered the text from the viewpoint of a mentor or parent who is concerned about a youngster, as well as from my not-too-distant viewpoint as a rebellious teenager who was just knew she much smarter than her own parents. Well, it works. This is not a preachy book, so the reviewer below who found it non-abstinence-insistent was right. The text encourages parents and daughters to have open discussions (with specific topics and starting points), so that the daughter can form her own personal boundaries. If a tween girl drafts her own idea of boundaries and limits, with her own healthy reasoning, instead of being berated by parents and adults, she is going to follow them more intensely. One discussion topic is female sexuality in popular media, with the "shock" of Judy Blume's Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret in the 1970's and Eve Ansler's Vagina Monologues in the 1990's. Just reading that section makes me want to go back and talk to my 50-year-old mother about her experiences in the sixties versus her experiences raising me and taking me to sex education seminars with the Girl Scouts. I imagine it will raise healthy, bonding dialogue for parents of the next generation, too.
Buy this worthwhile book, a package of sticky note tabs, a blank journal, and prepare for some open, important discussions in a well-structured, non-threatening environment.
