Question : How do I, as a disabled pastor, start a ministry for those with disabilities?
I have been led to start a ministry in Philadelphia, PA whose primary purpose is to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those with physical and developmental challenges. I myself have a mild case of Cerebral Palsy. I have been and still am a pastor, and I have been a history teacher. I am a husband, father, and grandfather. My aim is to develop programs that will allow those with disabilities to discover that there are more letters in ability then there are in dis. What I need to know is, How do I go about making this mission a reality? I need an accessible building, an adaptable van, braille printer, TTY machines, and computers that can be adapted to meet the special needs of those who will be using them.

Answer:
Contact other pastors and let them know what you are doing. They might know people with disabilities who are reticinent about heading out and who might be more readily available for church if they knew someone who truly understood them would be there for them. Also, most cities have a religious council board that is made up of various religions. Their meetings are usually open to the public; you can go and speak with them. As for the building and equipment, I can't help you with that one. You may need to start in your livingroom. You can probably apply with various agencies. Is there a national agency for the blind? They should have a list of grants that are available.

Question : How can I modify teaching methods to fit certain disabilities?
This is for a class of mine, I guess it means pick out certain disabilities and modify them for a PE Class. This is the question as it states for my class: List methods for modifying teaching to meet the needs of specific disabilities

Answer:
This doesn't necessarily have to be PE. It can be for any academic area. So if you have a child who has fine motor difficulties and has difficulty writing and the goal of the assignment is for the child to demonstrate their understanding of photosynthesis you may allow this child to dictate their answers or report and allow and adult to type it, have the child respond orally to the teacher or record her answers on a tape recorder. This still meets the requirements of the assignment but allows a different mode of output that takes the child's disability into account. Children who have difficulty processing or understanding verbal language may be given copies of the classroom notes or use guided notes (fill in the blanks instead of writing down everything said). For activities that involve multi-step directions the teacher may provide them with written or visual directions to help them complete all the steps in the activity. Think about a specific child's disability and would an assignment have to be modified in its input presentation to the child or could the requirements for the output/ final product be modified so the child could demonstrate their knowledge of the content in a different way.
